I have been a school teacher since 1979. My love for science and the outdoors brought me to start fly fishing in 1983. I traveled to Montana in 1984 for a fly fishing honeymoon and have made that journey each and every year since. The Madison River has seen me each of those twenty one years. I have established a number of wonderful memories also fishing the Big Hole Ruby, Beaverhead, Gallatin, Firehole, Yellowstone, Big Blackfoot, Clarks Fork, Bitterroot, Missouri, Rock Creek, Henry’s Fork, Snake, Silver Creek, and many of their tributaries during my pilgrimages to the Rockies.
My home waters in California have allowed me to fly fish each month of the year giving me the opportunity to grow in my experiences of wild trout. My favorite places are the small streams to medium sized rivers that offer wild trout in wild places. These trout are willing to rise to a dry fly twelve months of the year. I also enjoy fishing the angler favorites of Northern California such as the Yuba, Sacramento, Upper Sac, Pit, McCloud, Truckee, Hat Creek, and all four forks of the Feather River system.
I began guiding in 1992. My first experience began as a favor to Bill Kiene to take a few of his fly shop customers out fishing for the day. He suggested that I should consider guiding during the summer months when I wasn’t teaching or coaching. Finally, I went ahead and followed his suggestion. Since that first year, I have met a number of wonderful people and have had great experiences on the water. All of these experiences have added to my love of fly fishing and have taught me valuable lessons about guiding. One thing I definitely learned in my early guiding years is that I provide better service and we all have more fun, when I take only a one or two people.
Today, my trips are usually with one person, especially if that person is just beginning to fly fish; two, if both people have some skills. This rule has been very beneficial to my clients and to me as well. We all seem to enjoy the day!
