In California, I enjoy guiding on many smaller bodies of water offering dry fly fishing for wild trout throughout the year.
I like to travel to places that are far less famous and provide the fisherman with solitude, a special experience, and many opportunities. The sizes of the fish are mostly in the six to fourteen inch range as
a norm with larger fish as the exception.
You will have the opportunity to spend the entire day on the water alone, just you and the fish, with me as your shadow. You will see wild fish, wild flowers, and probably some poison oak; but we avoid the latter!
A variety of birds, maybe one or two rattlesnakes, some bear shit, even a bear, might cross our path.
I don’t guide on the Pit, McCloud, Upper Sac, or Hat Creek. I feel that the local guides that work those rivers on a daily or yearly basis would provide the paying angler a far better value for their money. I don’t enjoy guiding on the Yuba; I feel that this river is very special and experiencing enough pressure without me adding to it.
I have a week trip to Montana each year.
I act as a host and I use my dear friend of eighteen years, Jimmy Allison, who has been guiding on the Madison, Big Hole, Beaverhead, and Yellowstone Rivers for the past twenty plus years. Also, when needing more drift boats, a call is made to Dave Hall, Dave Scully, or Dan Glines. I consider each of these men an excellent guide, person and friend. Wade trips are also offered on the Gallatin, Ruby, Rock Creek, Bitterroot and many smaller tributaries. I use the beautiful Rainbow Valley Motel while we are in Ennis.
Cabins and houses are also available to rent as well.
I have hosted trips for Kiene’s Fly Shop in Sacramento to Montana and the Rainbow Lodge in British Columbia as well.
